CAMERONS BREWERY (England)

Camerons Brewery Ltd is an English brewery located in Hartlepool, Durham.  It is known that an artesian well on the site of the current brewery has been used for brewing since at least 1572.  William Waldon (1805 - 1854), a Gainford farmer, founded the Lion Brewery in Stranton (later part of West Hartlepool) on land he bought from Ralph Walker for £ 300 in 1852.  After Waldon's death in 1854, the brewery was taken over by his widow, Jane.  In 1865, John William Cameron was invited to run the brewery.  In 1872, Cameron rented the brewery and 16 of its pubs for a period of 21 years.  In 1875, Henry Wilson of Phoenix Works built a new brewery for Cameron.  The current building of the brewery was built in 1892.  After the end of the lease, in 1893, Cameron bought the brewery from the Waldon family for £ 34,442 and appointed his brother Watson as managing director.

In 1894, the company went public with a registered capital of £ 345,000.  In 1895, the Brunswick Brewery in Hartlepool was bought and closed.  In 1897, T E Chapman & Son was bought with 80 pubs.  In the same year, the new Lion Brewery was completed to produce 130,000 barrels per year.  At that time, the company already had 400 licensed buildings.

The brewery currently has a production capacity of 1.5 million hl (1 million barrels) of beer per year (the 11th largest brewery in the UK).  The brewery brews its most famous Strongarm beer, as well as IPA, Bullion Gold and Trophy Special.  Foster's, Kronenbourg 1664, John Smith's Magnet, Tetley Imperial and keg versions of Tetley Mild and Tetley Dark Mild are brewed under license.  The company owns 75 pubs.  24% of the company's shares are owned by Heineken, however, there is not a single Heineken representative on the board of directors.

Camerons Brewery was the first brewery to sponsor football clubs - Middlesbrough FC in 1984–86 and Hartlepool United in 1985–1990 and 1993–2000.
