The history of Liefmans dates back to the 17th century when Jacobus Lifmans founded his own brewery.  Its building has stood on the banks of the Scheldt River for over 300 years, and the first brewing machine is still there as a museum exhibit.

Around 1900, the surrounding farms had a good harvest of black cherries.  Farmers often traded surplus crops for beer, and it was during this time that the Liefmans began adding cherries to their fermentation vats.

Both the taste and color of this cherry beer have come a long way since then.  Rosa Merckx played a key role in this: a highly gifted and versatile lady whose talents were rubbed off from ballet to brewing.  A single-minded and uncompromising woman, she set herself the goal of making her mark on the history of Belgian beer, and thanks to her active participation over several decades, the history of cherry beer has become a success story.

Together with modern master brewers, she still monitors the quality of Liefmans products, and the label of every bottle produced is now marked with her signature.
