BROUWERIJ HUYGHE (Belgium)

In the city of Melle (Belgium), beer has been brewed since 1654.  In 1902, Leon Huyghe took a job at a local brewery.  Here he met the daughter of the owner of the brewery, Delphine Van Dorselaer, and they soon got married.  In 1906, Leon Höge became the owner of the brewery, which he named Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel.  In 1921, their son Albert Høge married the daughter of the industrialists from Wetteren, and in 1925 their daughter Maria Louise Høge married the son of the Zottegem brewer Louis Dresbesque.  Albert Hoege and Louis Dresbesque start working together at the family brewery.  In 1928, the Höge family undertook a major modernization of the brewery, and ten years later the brewery was renamed SPRL Brasserie Leon Huyghe.  By 1964, the SPRL Brasserie Leon Huyghe brewery is expanding its production.  A line for the production of bottle caps appears.  In the 70s, a clientele network of pubs and restaurants develops, in addition to beer, water and soft drinks are produced.  On December 26, 1989, the famous Delirium Tremens brand appeared.  The unique taste comes from the use of three different varieties of yeast, and the original bottle and colorful label contributed to the success of this beer.  The label depicts the various stages of the Delirium Trees, first a pink elephant, then a green crocodile, monsters and finally terrifying birds.  In 1993, at the request of the American market, a wide range of Floris fruit beers was introduced.  In 1997, the Delirium Tremens brand was nominated for The Best Beer n the World.  The gold medal received at the World Beer Championships in 1998 confirmed the worldwide recognition of the brand!  Today, about 39 combs of different beers are brewed at the Huyghe-Brouwerij brewery, and since 1996 a museum has been opened here.
